In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) the step-by-step process

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most well-known and effective fertility treatments.

If you're considering this path, you probably have a lot of questions and maybe a little anxiety about the unknown.

Today we're going to tell you, step by step, what the IVF process is like, so you can feel more confident and supported.

1. Initial evaluation and diagnosis

It all starts with an evaluation appointment.

Here, the specialist reviews your medical history, performs tests, and determines whether IVF is the best option for you and your partner (or just you, if that's your case).

At this stage, a personalized plan is created, because each person and each story are unique.

2. Ovarian stimulation

For a few days (usually between 8 and 12), you will be given hormonal medication to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs than usual.

Don't worry, the medical team will teach you how to apply it and will assist you with ultrasound checks and blood tests to ensure everything is going well.

3. Follicular puncture

When the follicles (the “sacs” where the eggs grow) reach the appropriate size, follicular puncture is scheduled.

It's a simple procedure that takes just a few minutes and is performed under mild sedation, so you won't feel any pain.

That same day, your partner (or the donor) provides the sperm sample.

4. Fertilization in the laboratory

In the laboratory, embryologists select the best eggs and sperm and perform fertilization.

In some cases, the ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) technique is used, which involves inserting a sperm directly into the egg to increase the chances of success.

5. Embryo culture

Fertilized eggs become embryos and are kept in special incubators that reproduce the conditions of the human body.

For 3 to 5 days, the medical team evaluates their development and selects the embryo(s) with the greatest potential.

6. Embryo transfer

When the embryo is ready, embryo transfer is performed: a quick and painless procedure in which the embryo is placed inside the uterus.

After the transfer, you can resume your normal activities, following your doctor's instructions.

7. Pregnancy test

After about 10 to 14 days, a blood test (beta hCG) is performed to confirm whether the treatment was successful.

We know this wait can be intense, so it's important that you have the emotional support you need.
